What is UTI?
Urinary Tract is the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Urinary Tract is the infection caused in urine. It generally starts in Bladder and sometimes affects Kidneys too. This usually happens when germs from the poo, which are on the skin get into urethra and then into bladder.
Symptoms of UTI in Babies & Kids
In young children it is easy to make out as the general symptoms are a pain in the belly area, peeing more often, bedwetting, or losing control over their bladder and/or drops of blood in the urine. In babies who suffer the most, you can observe if the baby is crying while peeing, foul smell, unable to pee completely at once, fever, nausea, or diarrhea.
Treatment for UTI
The only way to diagnose UTI is by a urine test. Sometimes further investigation is necessary like a Renal Ultrasound Scan to check if there are any blockages and proper kidney functioning. Nuclear scans or MRI also could be insisted. Antibiotics may be recommended as needed and this may take about a week to cure.
Preventing UTI
- Change the baby’s diaper more often.
- Early potty training can be helpful.
- Clean their genital area with water every 2 hours, and not soap.
- Suggest older kids not to hold their pee for long.
- Encourage older children to drink a lot of fluids and breastfeed or formula feed the baby well.
These were the details regarding UTI in babies and kids. Remember that this is common in girls than boys and both need extra care. Few hygiene habits can help prevent this but remember this is not caused only due to hygiene issues. Checking symptoms early and treating is best here.
