Today, nobody is safe. Every day we see, listen, or read about child abuse or molestation. Kids are the easy targets for these culprits, as they are too young to understand the difference between good touch and bad touch. Moreover, bullying and threatening kids are very easy. Not only girls but small, young boys are also the victims.

Parenting has never been a simple or easy job, especially when it comes to this topic. But we have to get past that discomfort and talk about this topic. It’s high time now that we inform our kids about the danger without creating any anxiety. As parents, it is our role to make our kids aware of the world around them and to teach them how to handle such situations.

When to teach our kids about unsafe touches?

Children are full of energy and curiosity, in their early childhood around 2-5 Years. There are some parents who teach their kids about good and bad touches in the early years but some parents think preschoolers may be too young to understand. Don’t wait for the schools or educational society to teach your child. Awareness is power, it is never too early or too late to start teaching basic sexuality education to your kid.

  • Create Opportunity

You can create opportunities to start the talk. Start the discussion while playing, putting them to sleep, bath time…anytime when your child is comfortable and is ready to listen to you patiently and also in an interactive mood. Create opportunities like giving a hug, a kiss, and then teach them about the difference between good and bad.

  • Use appropriate language

Using appropriate language and expressions will make them at ease. Let the conversion happen naturally, not creating curiosity and anxiety about the topic.

  • No to unnecessary affection

Don’t force your child to touch feet and hug someone if kids are refusing to. Just greeting with a “Namaste” from a distance is enough. This doesn’t mean you are teaching your kid to be rude. It’s just avoiding unnecessary touch.

  • Know your body

Teach your kid about their body parts that we usually keep covered. Teach them the names of private parts and no one has permission to touch them. Also inform them sometimes elders may help them to keep clean and healthy like parents, care-takers at school, doctors.

  • Explain good and bad touch

A good touch is that makes you feel happy and safe. Like hugs, kisses from parents, sisters, brothers, grandparents. Bad touch is that make you feel bad, sad and hurts you physically or emotionally. Be careful and stay away.

  • Explain to them that some part of the body is private

Explain to them that there 3 danger points on our body, which is private and any stranger should be allowed to touch it or see it. Explain to them that doctors can see them without their clothes as they would be accompanied by mummy or daddy. Care-takers at school or at home can help or assist them in toilets only.

  1. Chest
  2. The part between the legs
  3. Buttocks or bum or bottom
  • Teach them boundaries

As they should learn not to allow anybody to touch their private parts, children should also be taught not to touch other private parts. As parents, we often tend to forget this.

  • Taking pictures of private parts is a strict NO

Trading naked pictures of children, has become common today which puts your child to risk. Tell your kids that no one should be allowed to take naked pictures of them. As parents, you also should follow this.

  • Listen to your kids

As parents beware and alert of the surroundings. Listen to the child carefully also keep your eyes open to their reactions and other signs. Be a friend to them, so that it becomes simple for them to share everything that happens. Teach and show them that parents can help them in any situation. Do not neglect even the smallest reaction. Approve, compliment, or praise your kid if he/she shares something with you. This will encourage them to share things easily next time.

What do you do when someone touches you in the wrong way?

  1. Shout! Shout! Shout!
  2. Say a big NO
  3. Runaway fast. Go to a safe place.
  4. Stay together. Make a buddy group
  5. Don’t keep secrets. Always share with some elderly person whom you trust
  6. If the kids are big, give them a code word for the DANGER. This can be used when in public or a sleepover or some guests at home, whenever the child feels unsafe and needs your help

So let’s educate our kids and teach them to be ready to face and handle the weird situation or person around them. As parents, join hands with your kid and make the world safe and a better and healthy place to live.
