Squint eyes or strabismus are a misalignment of the two eyes where the eyes do not look in the same direction. Six muscles control the movement of each eye, and each of these muscle acts along with its counterpart in the other eye to keep them both appropriately aligned. A loss of coordination between the muscles of the two eyes leads to this misalignment. When an individual is trying to focus on an object the other might turn either inwards, outwards, upwards, or downwards. This misalignment may be occasional, temporary, or permanent.

If a child is not treated by an appropriate time a condition called amblyopia might occur, which means there can be permanent loss of vision in one eye. Another problem one can face is a loss of binocular vision or 3d vision, which helps one to judge how far things are. Hence it is very important to plan a visit to Ophthalmologist and provide treatment if necessary between 1-2 years of age or between 6-8 years of age before they lose binocular vision.

The first step in squint eye correction is the prescription of glasses. After the glasses have been worn, the doctor reassesses the squint.

  2. Eyes Patch

In the case of amblyopia or lazy eye, the doctor will advise patching of the good eye according to an age-based schedule. This technique forces the eye with a weaker vision to see well.

  3. Botulinum Toxin Injections

In some cases, ophthalmologists prefer to penalize the good eye with dilating drops. This technique also forces the eye with a weaker vision to see well.

  4. Exercises

Exercises meant to strengthen the eye muscles are suggested in some cases. These can be hospital-based, on a machine called synoptophore, or to be done at home.

  5. Corrective Surgery

When it is mandatory for corrective surgery, there may be a corrective surgery on one eye or if the deviation is significant surgery on both eyes is required. Another surgery for cosmetic correction or functional results may be needed too. Sometimes there evolves a necessity of partial correction at a later stage due to recurring squint but this is in a very rare case.

The treatment in India currently as learned may cause somewhere between 10,000 to 2 lakh depending upon the city, facility, and treatment required. Remember that squint eye is not a sign of good luck. It not only affects your child’s appearance but vision too and hence it is important to treat it between 1 or 2 years of his age. As the child grows older it becomes very difficult to treat squint and regain the lost vision. However, cosmetic straightening can be done at any age.
