Sabudana Upma is a nutritious breakfast recipe – high in healthy carbohydrates, protein, and fiber. Generally, as a fasting recipe, sabudana upma is made with some nuts and potatoes. Here I’ve included lots of vegetables to make it a nourishing breakfast for babies, kids, and toddlers.

Babies love texture in their food and sago or sabudana is a great way to add it and recommended post 8 months. You can customize the recipe and add any vegetable or pulses of your choice, which are seasonal too.

Sabudana Upma for Babies, Toddlers & Kids

Sabudana Upma is a nutritious breakfast recipe – high in healthy carbohydrates, protein, and fibre. Generally, as a fasting recipe, sabudana upma is made with some nuts and potatoes. Here I’ve included lots of vegetables to make it a nourishing breakfast for babies, kids, and toddlers.

Ingredients

  1. Oil – 2 tbsp
  2. Mustard Seeds – Little
  3. Curry Leaves - Few
  4. Coriander – Little
  5. Vegetables –
    • Peas – 2 tbsp
    • Potato – ½
    • French beans – 10
    • Carrot – 1 small
  6. Lemon – ½
  7. Turmeric – 1 tsp
  8. Chilli Powder – 2 tsp
  9. Salt – As needed

Method

  1. At first, soak Sabudana or Tapioca Pearls for 1 hour after rinsing it thoroughly for 2 -3 times. Then drain off the water and leave it for about 3 – 4 hours. That’s when Sabudana gets grainy texture. Otherwise, it might become mushy or sticky.
  2. In a wide pan add oil, once heated add mustard seeds for spluttering, followed by Curry leaves, and add all the chopped vegetables of your choice. Here I have added Onion, Carrot, Peas, and Potato. Cover the pan with a lid for better results. This way, vegetables are cooked perfectly. You can add a pinch of salt at this stage if you prefer. 
  3. Once the vegetables are cooked add a pinch of turmeric, chili powder, salt as per your taste and mix it gently.  To this pan, add drained sabudana.
  4. To the pan, add finely chopped coriander leaves and squeeze the lemon, mix well. As an option, you can cover the pan with a lid for 2 - 3 minutes.
  5. Soft, delicious SabudanaUpma is all ready to be served!

Method of preparing Sabudana Upma

  1. At first, soak Sabudana or Tapioca Pearls for 1 hour after rinsing it thoroughly for 2 -3 times. Then drain off the water and leave it for about 3 – 4 hours. That’s when Sabudana gets grainy texture. Otherwise, it might become mushy or sticky.
