A phase that every child goes through can be difficult, scary, and depressing. We need to be prepared to deal with it and help our children understand it better and be ready for the days to come. When I type this I realize my daughter shall be completing 7 and I need to start talking more about it. With some research, I found a few things which can be helpful for you and me to do the TALK a bit comfortably.

When to talk & how to start?

I would say it is never too early. Your child may be already getting some information from multiple sources, online – movie – friends – gossips, etc. If you want to be sure that your child gets the right set of information do it before the assumptions start. Also doing it before they reach the stage will make them more confident and ready.

What is Puberty?

Puberty is a change your body goes through when you grow up. It happens to both boys and girls and is totally normal. This is a transition from a child to an adult making them ready for sexual reproduction.

What age?

The average age for girls is 11, varying between 7 – 15 and boys is 12, varying between 10 – 16. But this can be different for everyone.

Signs of Puberty

  • Girls – Breast development, adult body odor, pubic and underarms hair growth, rapid growth in height, change in body shape, acne, vaginal discharge, and bleeding.
  • Boys – Enlargement of testicles, adult body odor, pubic and underarms hair growth, rapid growth in height, acne, excess hair growth on skin mainly facial hair and develop a deeper voice.

Some must

  1. Use proper body part language for genitals from the beginning. Just like you use words like arms and legs it’s good to call vagina, testicles, or penises. Keeping it casual is important.
  2. Teach them about good touch and bad touch
  3. Confront them that their breast size, height, length of penises, change in voice, facial hair occurring slower or faster than others has no relation in any case. Every child is different and it will take its due course.
  4. It is very obvious that they will have more questions about puberty, try to be honest and as explanatory as possible. The more you hide or beat around the bushes, the more dangerous it can get for them.
