Causes of Mouth Ulcer or Canker Sores
- Minor injuries to the mouth can trigger a canker sore. Examples are from a rough food or a hard toothbrush.
- Biting oneself while chewing can start one.
- Food allergies or irritants may also be a trigger.
- Vitamin deficiencies can also be a cause. A vitamin deficiency can occur if your child is a picky eater.
- Poor diet – regular junk food intake.
- Lack of Sleep.
- Stress.
- Poor Oral Hygiene.
- Canker sores can run in families (genetic).
- Often, the cause is unknown.
Symptoms of Mouth Ulcer in Kids
- Small ulcers have a white center with a red border around them.
- Size is usually less than ¼ inch (6 mm).
- Found on the inner lips and inner cheeks.
- The sores are very painful, even when not eating.
- Usually, get 1 canker sore at a time. Sometimes get 2 or 3.
- No fever or other symptoms.
Food Suggestions
- Keep the child hydrated. Give lots of liquids. Water or Juices.
- Reduce the intake of sweet or very spicy food.
- Avoid eating hot foods.
- Offer soft foods with less spice.
Home Remedies for Mouth Ulcers in Kids
- Apply honey or ghee on the affected part. Both have great anti-bacterial properties.
- Give them few Tulasi or basil leaves to chew. They also help in avoiding the reoccurrence of mouth ulcers.
- Curd or Buttermilk helps. Lactic acid present in it suppresses bacterial growth in the area.
- Coconut is a great help – drinking tender coconut water, rinsing the mouth with coconut milk, applying coconut oil.
When to meet the doctor for Mouth Ulcers?
- If it continues for more than 1-2 weeks.
- The size of the sore is increasing by more than ½ inch.
- Your child feels feverish.
- If this is a regular concern every now and then.
Few things parents need to work on if this is a regular issue
- Take care of oral hygiene – brushing twice a day is important. Visit the dentist once in 6 months even if there is no issue.
- Work on their immunity – good healthy foods. Make sure Vitamin C and B12 are high in their diet. Give them lots of citric fruits. Include lemon in their diet.
- Build a habit of drinking lots of water and keeping themselves hydrated always.
