Dalia or Broken Wheat Porridge for Babies
Dalia or Broken Wheat is one of the healthiest and easily digested foods for all ages. Especially for babies, it is given in the form of porridge and is popularly known as Indian Porridge. It is of high nutritious value and when cooked it gives a tasty, aromatic, and nutty texture. It is healthy and tasty to be eaten in the form of a dessert as well for all ages. To make it easier for infants, it can be blended smoothly and fed easily. Dalia or Broken Wheat Porridge is a great way to introduce homemade porridges for babies which can be cooked easily at home.
Dalia or Broken Wheat Porridge for Babies
Can be given to 8 Months + and early if there is no family history of gluten allergy due to wheat. This porridge will be naturally flavored and nutty in taste and babies would love the same. There is no need to add any sweeteners for babies till a year. If you wish you can spice it up naturally. I would recommend adding cumin powder, cardamom powder, or cinnamon powder and this applies to all porridges for babies below a year. Here I’ve added homemade Dates Powder and Nuts Powder to make this nutritious. You can skip this to keep it easy and simple or you can simply use soaked dates to sweeten up for babies below a year or Jaggery for babies above a year. Ingredients
- Dalia or Broken Wheat - 2 Tbsp
- Dates Powder/Dates - 2 Tsp
- Nuts Powder - 1 Tbsp
- Cardamom Powder - a pinch
- Water / Milk - 1 Cup
Method
- In a pressure cooker add ghee and heat it. Rinse required amount of Dalia or Broken Wheat and add it to hot ghee and fry it for 2 minutes till it leaves a nice aroma.
- To this mixture, add dates powder and nuts powder and mix well again.
- Now add a pinch of cardamom or cinnamon powder followed by milk/water.
- Stir the mixture well to ensure there are no lumps formed. Close the lid and pressure cook for two whistles or pan cook for 15 minutes.
- Once it cools down open the lid and mix again. Dalia porridge can be served as it is to toddlers or adults.
- For babies as well it can be given in the same way with little texture. If you are worried about baby not chewing then blend it in a blender so that it is easy to feed. I've used Wonderchef Blender jar here.
- Dalia Porridge is ready to be served.
