Bottle Gourd Soup for Babies, Toddlers & Kids
Bottle Gourd/ Calabash / Opo Squash is a nutritious vegetable and is quite famous in Indian households. It’s called Lauki or dudhi in Hindi, Sorekayi in Kannada, and Telugu and Surekkai in Tamil. It is always recommended to give all healthy varieties to babies in the first year of their life and hence sharing a recipe here I tried recently – Bottle Gourd Soup.
Benefits of Bottle Gourd :
• Rich in dietary fiber, both soluble and insoluble, and hence helps in keeping the gut healthy
• Contains more than 90% water and helps keep the body cool and refreshed
• Rich in Iron, Vitamin B, and Vitamin C
• It is well recommended in Ayurveda to consume this more often to have balanced liver functioning.
Just like all soups, this one is great for all seasons especially during cold as it helps keep the body warm. Make it for your child who is suffering from cough or cold to bring in quick relief. Good to offer to kids when they are ill, as this is light – easily digestible yet filling. The addition of yellow moong dal makes it a super-nutritious evening snack.

Bottle Gourd Soup for Babies, Toddlers & Kids

Ingredients
- Bottle Gourd – 1 cup chopped
- Moongdal / Yellow Lentil – 2 tbsp
- Butter – 1 tbsp
- Shallots – 2 sliced
- Garlic – 2 cloves
- Ginger – ½ inch
- Almonds – 2 soaked & peeled
- Water – 1 cup or as needed
Method
- In a pressure cooker or a pan add Butter followed by sliced shallots. Fry it for a minute and add ginger and garlic.
- Fry all the ingredients till it leaves a nice aroma. Add deskinned and roughly chopped Bottle gourd.
- Add rinsed yellow lentil or moongdal and fry again for a minute.
- Add water as needed to be followed by cumin powder. Pressure cook it for 2 whistles or pan cook for 15-20 minutes till soft.
- Optionally you can add soaked and deskinned almonds. Make a fine puree by adding just a little more water if required.
- Ensure to keep the soup thick enough to stand on one's finger if you are making it for a baby and you can dilute it further for toddlers and add salt as needed.
- Bottle gourd Soup is ready to be served.
