Few most important points you must know before weaning

  1. The ideal recommendation is 6 months of Exclusive breastfeeding, followed by continued breastfeeding until 1 year and complimentary breastfeeding till 2 years as per WHO and IHO.
  2. Most women or families would wish to stop breastfeeding early which is not recommended, but if you can reach half the milestone of 1 year its really commendable. This way you help your baby stay immune, and you can check that in general breastfed babies are less prone to infections or illness – such are cough, cold, fever, constipation, diarrhea, etc.
  3. No cow’s, buffalo’s, goats, or any other milk for babies till a year. It must only be Formula Milk if by any chance you stop it before your baby’s first birthday. The worst thing I’ve heard and seen is diluting cow’s milk with 4 times water and feeding baby. Feeding goats or donkey’s milk for strength. I do not make fun of it, but I want to educate you that it’s the last thing your baby needs. Watch our video on why no cow’s milk to babies below a year.
  4. Post one year there is no need to push your child to drink cow’s milk. Healthy Solids are enough for his nutrition accomplishment.
  5. If your child is frequently crying and has varied or no good sleep patterns at night or a child fall sick during this process you may want to resume breastfeeding as it’s the best medicine for him. Later try it again. Don’t force yourself or baby for this huge change as it can hamper the baby’s physical and mental growth

There are multiple ways of weaning babies off breastmilk. Here we shall discuss a few general methods and guide you to choose the best one.

  • Child-Led Weaning

Baby’s show less interest and stop breastfeeding themselves. It is ok if the toddler is weaning on his own as now they are taking a good amount of solids. This is rare though and I insist these cues are only for toddlers.

  • Sudden Weaning

This method is stopping to breastfeed suddenly. It’s difficult for both mother and baby – physically & emotionally. Along with the change in food pattern, this may cause severe anxiety, stress, frustration, anger in baby, and in mother it may lead to severe breast engorgement and pain for multiple days. This may also cause fever, breast infection, breast abscess which needs to be operated and removed. Until there is any medical emergency there is no need to follow this method.

  • Traditional methods

Using an external medication, applying unwanted creams, pastes, lehya or any liquid to make your baby stop feeding can lead to several complications. Also sending baby away to in-laws or parent’s homes is not a good option as a baby is missing two important things in his life – mother and his favorite milk.

  • Mother-led Gradual Weaning

This is one of the best methods to date which is good for both mother and baby. In this method, the mother tries to stop one feed at a time gradually reducing the total number of feed to zero. This may be a long process but very safe for both mother and baby. As I insist to do this post two years or at least 18 months, now your baby would understand when you say NO. Be gentle, calm, and do not stress over this. While you reduce each feed your body would increase the immune levels in the limited breastfeed you offer towards the end of the breastfeeding journey making it the best way in comparison to sudden feed. Baby’s body this way will understand the change and yours too.

Few tips to help babies cope up weaning from Breastmilk

  1. Ensure good nutrition
  2. Change baby’s routine – add playtime, story sessions
  3. Take your partner’s help. Your in-laws, parents or older child can be of a great help
  4. Introduce water glass or sippy cups and offer water or milk in it basis their age
  5. Start from night weaning preferably.
  6. Be consistent in reducing the feed. The time you reduce one day should be the same.

Tips to reduce discomfort caused to mother during the process

Fever due to pain, Breast infection, Mastitis, Breast Abscess, and other issues mother may suffer with, as the milk ducts would be filled.

  • Applying warm compresses to the breasts before feeding, or taking a hot bath.
  • Express milk if it is hurting a lot. Expressing more can be a signal to your body to produce more.
  • Applying chilled cabbage leaves to the breast may help with swelling.
  • Applying cold compresses (ice bags) after feeding.
  • Massaging the breasts to reduce the risk of plugged ducts.
  • Wearing a supportive bra, as the breasts may feel heavier. Tight clothing and binding can make the pain worse and may even cause a breast infection.
  • A Breastpad may help to soak the leakage especially if you are out of the house.

How long it may take and when will your milk dry up?

As for when your milk supply will slow and eventually stop after weaning, several factors come into play. It depends on the age of the baby and how often the baby nursed or the parent pumped milk.

Once a mother completely stops breastfeeding, her milk supply will dry up within 7 to 10 days, though you may still notice a few drops of milk for weeks or even months beyond when you stop breastfeeding. If you do continue to produce significant amounts of milk weeks after weaning baby, you might be experiencing a hormonal issue. Talk to your doctor, and she’ll help you work it out.

In this emotional phase, you don’t have to be away from each other. Hug, cuddle, kiss your baby and make the journey less difficult. All the Best.
