What Is Barnyard Millet?

Barnyard Millet is known as Kuthiravali in Tamil, Oodalu in Kannada, Odalu in Telugu, Jhangora in Hindi, and Kavadapullu in Malayalam. Barnyard Millet is gluten-free and a vegan cereal belongs to the Millet family, which is a tiny white, round grain “The Siruthaniyam”.

Ingredients

  1. Barnyard Millet – 2 cups
  2. Sago – ¾ cup
  3. Urad Dal - ¾ cup
  4. Poha – ½ cup
  5. Methi Seeds - 2 tsp
  6. Salt - 1/2 tsp

Method

  1. The above mentioned ingredients are made ready. Now rinse the Millet multiple times to get white grains and get rid of the dust and soak them separately for 4 hours.
  2. Add Sago- 3/4 cup, Poha- 1/2 cup, Urad Dal 3/4 cup, and Methi Seeds - 2 tsp as mentioned above and soak in water for 4 hours. Now add the soaked Barnyard Millet to the mixer and grind it course, use water as required for Dosa and Idly Batter consistency. Transfer this into a glass bowl for mixing.
  3. Now add the other bowl of soaked ingredients to the mixer with water as required. Grind the mixture into a coarse paste.
  4. Transfer this batter mixture into the Barnyard Miller batters glass bowl and mix both very well. Allow the batter to ferment for 8 hours in a warm place.
  5. The batter is ready to use now. Add Salt as required and mix well. Pour them into the Idli moulds and steam it for 15 to 20 minutes.
  6. Barnyard Idli is ready to serve and relish with Coconut Chutney for the family and the kids.
  7. The fermented batter is ready to use. Add water if required to attain the Dosa consistency and pour it in the pre-heated oiled non-stick tava. Close the lid to cook the Dosa.
  8. The Dosa is cooked both sides and once its cooked well its ready to serve hot to relish with Coconut chutney for the family and the kids.

Method of making Banyard Millet Idy & Dosa

1. The ingredients mentioned are made ready. Now rinse the Millet multiple times to get white grains get rid of the dust and soak them separately for 4 hours.
