A protein and carbohydrate rich food for babies who are just being introduced to textures. Green Gram or Moong for babies is well suggested after introducing basic fruits and vegetables as its one of the easily digestible lentils. Rice being another great food for babies, high in carbs and easily digestible, we can start this early too. Green Gram Rice Mash is famously called as pachai payaru or pasi paruppu sadam in tamil, and well suggested for babies.
When you are following Traditional Weaning Method after introducing purees to babies by 6 month you can start them on Mashed foods. This makes for a great lunch for them which is power packed with required nutrients and also a healthy weight gaining food. This recipe also falls into khichdi category and hence can be offered to kids and adults as a breakfast option.

Green Gram Rice Mash for Babies & Toddlers

Ingredients
- Green Gram - 1/4 cup
- Rice - 1/4 cup
- Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
- Cumin Powder - 1/4 tsp
- Garlic - 2 pods
Method
- Take a pressure pan and add rinsed green gram followed by rinsed rice. You can soak both ingredients for a while to cook it quickly.
- Add 2 garlic pods and turmeric powder.
- Add Cumin powder and water just sufficient to cook the ingredients.
- Pressure cook for 3 whistles. Once cook check if all the ingredients are cooked well.
- Mash the ingredients using a potato masher or hand blender. Serve it warm.
- Green Gram Rice Mash is ready.

Note :
- Its good to introduce texture to babies after 7 months, the earlier the better.
- This makes for a great cough and cold remedy as well.
