Green Gram is rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals and it’s famous worldwide for its great benefits to babies. In India because of the varied benefits its included in many traditional baby food recipes. In this Green Gram Porridge recipe, I’ve included Green Gram, Ragi – Finger Millet, Rice and Broken Wheat(Dalia). The advantage of making your own baby food mix is that you can customize it as per your liking. Here I’ve added cumin to flavor this porridge you can add dry ginger, pepper etc. For older babies – above 8 months you can sprout Green Gram and Ragi to make this mixture.
Green Gram Porridge for Babies
For a baby’s overall healthy development its necessary that we ensure to give a combination of foods and not repeat a food too often, even if the baby likes it. The reason for this is overall nutrition comes from a great eating habit which includes variety as it can fill in the body’s requirement of all necessary nutrients and minerals. In turn, this helps baby to gain appropriate height and weight too. This can be given to 6 months plus baby after introducing basic solids for the first two weeks.

Green Gram Porridge for Babies

Ingredients
- Green Gram - 1/2 cup
- Finger Millet or Ragi - 1/2 cup
- Broken Wheat / Dalia - 1/4 cup
- Rice - 1/4 cup
- Cumin - 1/4 tsp
Method
- Take a bowl and add Green Gram. Rinse it twice and repeat the same with Finger Millet or Ragi too.
- Spread Green Gram and Ragi on separate muslin or neat cotton cloth and allow it to sundry for 1/2 an hour or until dry.
- Both Finger Millet and Green Gram can be soaked and sprouted for babies above 8 months to make this mix.
- Take a pan add Green Gram and dry roast it until it turns brown on medium flame. Follow the same with all the other ingredients Ragi, Rice, Broken Wheat / Dalia and Cumin. Once roasted keep transferring it to a plate to help it cool faster.
- Once it's cooled down blend all the ingredients to a smooth powder(a little coarse when ground in home mixers is fine). Transfer it to a glass jar and use it whenever required.
- To make porridge: Take a pan add 1 tbsp of Green Gram Porridge Mix followed by 1/2 cup water and mix it lumpfree before putting it on the flame to cook.
- Start cooking on medium flame and add Ghee and mix again. This may take 2-3 minutes to cook it well and thick consistency.
- Green Gram Porridge is ready to be served.
