Cuisine:Indian

Ingredients

Ingredients :

  1. Poha/ Avalakki - 3 Cups
  2. Tamarind - 1 lemon size
  3. Jaggery - 1 lemon size
  4. Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  5. Sambar powder - 4tsp
  6. Salt – 1 1/2tbsp

For Tadka:

  1. Mustard Seeds – ½ tsp
  2. Groundnut - ¼ cup
  3. Urad dal - 2 tbsp
  4. Dry Chilli(Byadagi variant) - 3
  5. Curry leaves as needed
  6. Coriander leaves - for garnish
  7. Asafoetida – ¼ tsp
  8. Grated dry or fresh coconut - optional

Method

  1. In a bowl measure the required amount of Poha. I have used thick here. Transfer to a blender jar and grind it to a coarse powder.
  2. The texture of the grinded Poha should look as shown below. Then transfer to a big bowl.
  3. Meanwhile, soak tamarind and extract the juice into the bowl. Tamarind gives a tangy taste to GojjuAvalakki.
  4. To the extracted tamarind juice add sambar powder and jaggery. The soul of this recipe is the unique taste, tanginess of tamarind, and sweetness from jaggery.
  5. Add turmeric powder followed by salt as per the taste and mix it well to a homogeneous mixture.
  6. Add the additional amount of water to soak poha. The ratio that works for me is 1 cup poha – 1 cup water. Ensure to adjust it including the tamarind juice. Add the prepared mixture to the bowl containing powdered poha. Rest it till you prepare tadka, for about 10 - 15 minutes.
  7. Once the water is completely absorbed by poha you can crumble it in your hands. This soft crumble like texture is just perfect to make GojjuAvalakki.

For Tadka:

  1. To a pan add some oil and splutter some mustard seeds. Add groundnuts fry until they turn golden brown.
  2. To this add urad dal. Groundnut and urad dal gives a nutty touch to GojjuAvalakki with every bite. Add a handful of curry leaves.
  3. Add dry chilies and asafoetida. Asafoetida has a unique pungent taste, this recipe does not include onion or garlic hence asafoetida adds in similar flavor and savouriness to this recipe.
  4. To the tadka, add the crumbled poha/ avalakki mixture followed by coriander leaves and mix well.
  5.  Add the grated dry or fresh coconut, mix well and simmer for about 5 - 7 minutes by covering the lid.
  6. Transfer the hot GojjuAvalakki to a serving bowl and add in additional fried groundnuts if required.
  7. Delicious GojjuAvalakki is ready to be served.
