4 Ragi Porridges for Babies | Ragi Recipes for Babies

Ragi has high protein content which helps cope malnutrition in babies in their formative years. Apart from protein, the calcium content is higher than other cereals which can compensate well for our body requirement. Ragi for babies also helps to gain weight and builds immunity. Ragi can be given to babies after they turn 6 months. Its advisable to start with fruits and vegetable purees, then move to single grain porridges like Sprouted Ragi Porridge, Rice or Wheat porridges. Ragi strengthens the immunity and one of the healthy options one can have. Ragi can be continued till as many years. There is no restriction on age for this healthy bite.

1. Sprouted Ragi Porridge for Babies – 6 months +

HOMEMADE SPROUTED RAGI POWDER for Babies, Toddlers, Kids & Family

Ingredients

  • Ragi / Finger Millet / Nachni – 2 cups

Method

  • Take 2 cups of Ragi / Finger Millet / Nachni
  • Rinse in water and wash at least two times.
  • Soak it for 8 hours.
  • After soaking Strain it and transfer to a clean cotton cloth.
  • Tie it tightly forming a potli.
  • Keep it in warm place which helps sprouting quicker.
  • After 8 hours you can see these nice ragi sprouts.
  • Transfer it to a plate and allow it to sun dry for about 24 – 48 hours depending on the sunlight.
  • After 2 days they must be well dried and ready to make a powder.
  • Transfer the Sprouted and Sun-dried Ragi to a pan and fry it in medium flame.
  • After they change the color switch off the flame, transfer to a plate and allow it to cool.
  • Once it is cooled transfer it to a Grinder and make a Fine Powder. If you are making bigger batches you can even give it a trusted Powder Mill nearby.
  • Ensure you sieve the powder once ground.

How to Cook Sprouted Ragi Porridge for Babies?

  • Take a pan and without putting it on flame add 1 cup of Water or Milk.
  • Add 2 tsp of Homemade Sprouted Ragi Powder
  • Ensure to mix it lump free
  • After mixing it well put it on medium flame and stir well and cook for about 5 mins.
  • While cooking you can observe the porridge changing color.
  • This consistency should be good to put off the flame. Once cooled it will thicken.

2. Sprouted Ragi Milk Porridge – 6 months +

Ingredients

Sprouted Ragi Milk

  • Sprouted Ragi – 1 cup
  • Water – as required

Sprouted Ragi Milk Porridge

  • Sprouted Ragi Milk – 2 cups
  • Ghee – 1 tsp
  • Jaggery – 1 tsp(optional)

Method

  • A bowl of sprouted ragi is transferred to the mixer. (Already sprouted ragi or overnight approximately 8 hours soaked ragi)
  • Firstly grind the mixer contents dry without water to make a coarse powder.
  • Now add little water for the mixer to grind to an extremely smooth texture, this helps in releasing the ragi koozh or ragi milk from the Sprouted ragi.
  • Repeat the above process again; adding water helps to strain the ragi koozh well.
  • Transfer the smooth ground ragi mixture to a bowl layered with a clean white muslin cloth.
  • Squeeze and extract the milk or koozh from the muslin cloth.
  • Ragi milk or ragi koozh is ready to be cooked now.
  • Transfer the Ragi koozh or ragi milk extracted to a nonstick tava and cook it with continuous stirring and not unattended to have a lump-free Sprouted Ragi Paal Koozh.
  • Add ghee once the mixture thickens a little.
  • At the finishes stage please add organic jaggery to the mixture for natural taste (+1 year old babies)
  • Dry fruits powder, elaichi or cardamom powder, cinnamon powder, cloves powder, and kesar could be added for toddlers and adults.
  • Healthy and tasty hot Sprouted Ragi Paal Koozh or Sprouted Ragi Milk Porridge are ready to be served as a health drink or energy drink.

3. Moong Ragi Porridge Mix – 6 months +

Ingredients

  • Green Gram/ Moong – 1/2 cup
  • Ragi / Nachni / Finger Millet – 1/2 cup
  • Rice – 1/2 cup
  • Dry Ginger – 1/2 inch
  • Cardamom – 1

Method

  • Dry roast the above ingredients until the color change
  • Add cardamom and switch off the flame
  • Cool them thoroughly
  • After cooling transfer the whole mixture a blender and make a fine powder
  • Store the powder in an airtight container and use it whenever required

4. Ragi Oatmeal Porridge – 6 months +

Ingredients 

Method

  • Dry roast ragi & oats on low flame for 2 minutes till smells nice.
  • Add milk slowly. Whisk it thoroughly so that they don’t form lumps.
  • Add sweetener and ghee and cook for 5-8 minutes.
  • Cool & serve
  • For older kids add dry fruits for garnishing
