A child can develop many habits at an early age. A habit to sleep early, a habit to brush and a habit to read. Reading habit is one of the healthiest habits & fundamental skills one can have in the early formative years. Reading habit aids in brain development; improves language skills and can be fostered at any age. Apart from these benefits it helps them know the world around and society in an easy way.

For a child, a routine is must to form it into a habit. Like, how we help them to make a routine for meals, sleep, getting up. Similarly, we need to make a routine for the daily read. You can choose the night time before sleep or any other time as per your comfort level.
2.Make a Reading Space
A reading space can be close to Bed, in the Balcony where we can have a direct light or within study room. A good lighting is must for reading as it wont burden your eyes to read.
3. Exposure to the Variety of Genre
There are all types of books available in the market and in online stores. We need to explore and introduce books only age-wise. A child can lose the interest if the book is not age-appropriate or the genre.
For babies – Pop-up books or Picture books. Mostly these books carry bright pictures and pop-up images which might attract babies and can develop reading habit.
For toddlers – 1 to 3 years – Picture books with short letters can be used for toddlers. It will also help them to understand words and right phonic sounds.
For Pre-schoolers – 3 to 5 years – Stories, Illustrations and Interactive books can help them to understand more about reading fun.
For Kids – 5 years and 10 years – This group can read and understand a variety of books. Comic, Stories-Real/Fiction can be easily introduced to them. Please choose the authors carefully before you hand over the book to them.
4. Make Reading Enjoyable
Reading and Story-telling in an art. Children enjoy these sessions if done artistically. Try reading some stories to them and make it enjoyable by changing your voice as per characters. Add little fun to your stories to make it more connected.

5. Set an Example
If a parent is a non-reader then it’s not easy to push a child to read books. As a parent, it’s our duty to read in front of them so that they can learn by setting examples. Children do what they see and a good reading habit within a family is always appreciated.

A child loves to explain about characters and other information which they read in stories. A regular discussion on books will help them to keep the reading spirit alive. A reading habit within the family can foster more open forums to discussions.
7. Take them to Library
Library is the good option to introduce the family of books. A good library provides the freedom to look at the books and choose as per their own interest. This will also help in to explore more about a different genre. Watching many people read kids’ interest will grow.
8. Gift them Books
Children love gifts whether its birthday or surprise. Try to gift books and help them to understand the value of gifting books to their friends. Create a joyous moment each time they get or gift a book.

9. Keep Books in their Reach
Let the younger one pick book as per the choice. The bookshelf should be accessible which helps them to know which book attracts them more. It’s more about the freedom to choose. You can even make a small library or keep the books on bookshelves for more visibility & a reach.
10. Encourage Story Telling
Storytelling is the audio-form of reading. It’s an art and it becomes easy for the reader to share her/his imaginary world in the form of the story.
