10 Summer Care Tips for Babies and Kids

Change of weather could be distressing for many parents. It can bring various kinds of diseases which are mostly contagious in nature. Since babies and kids have less immunity in their early years they are more prone to absorb weather-related infections. Again, summers are almost here and the reminder for all of us to bring a special care for our younger ones.
Summer care is must for babies and kids, if ignored that they might fall sick and can develop skin rashes, heat strokes or any kind of unwanted infection. We believe every mother knows best for their baby and kids, we are just reiterating the list for the extra love and care that you have with your children!

1. Choosing the right kind of Clothes
Choose 100% cotton by making sure that you check the labels and avoid blended fabrics. Only cotton has a quality to absorb body heat or sweat and keeping it cool. A cotton cap is again a must have for baby and keep kids in loose fitting clothing. For Baby Wrap, use light muslin or thin cotton only. Choose cloth diapers over disposable diapers and keep changing them with regular monitoring.
2. Hydration or Enough Water Intake
Our body depends on water to survive, to repair cells and to work properly. During summers we all need extra hydration or water to our body. For baby its mother’s milk or formula. Encourage kids to have lots of water. Fresh fruit juices(with less or no sugar), tender coconut water, chaas or lassi, popsicles – ice creams or kulfi, fresh vegetable salads help replenish water in the body. And homemade are the best always.
3. Sunscreen Cover
Apart from Vitamin-D, a sunlight also carries harmful radiations which can be allergic or burn the skin. A baby’s skin is always more sensitive than elders so we need to be extra careful to protect them from harsh sun rays. There are many sunscreens available which are specially made for babies and kids. In mild heat, you can always make sure to make them wear covered clothes to avoid direct contact with the skin.
4. Insects Repellent
Summer is the breeding time for mosquitoes and other flying insects. So whenever you are going out for a walk with your kids or taking them to play area please make sure you apply insects repellents to the exposed skin. This will protect them from any unwanted insect bite which can also bring the infection or sickness.
5. Schedule your Outdoor Activities
Morning 11.00 till afternoon 4.00 is supposed to be the hottest during summer. There is a high probability that you might get heat strokes with unbearable sunlight. Schedule your outing after or before the mentioned time frame. Carry a light colored umbrella, try to find and rest in shady places frequently.
6. Bath Time Care
Bathing is the great way to keep their body cool. Mostly all babies and kids enjoy bath time and playing with water. You can always bath them twice as per the temperature or heat. There is absolutely no harm in that.
7. Avoid Junk Food
Junk food has become a part of our lifestyle. But we need to be extra careful during summers to avoid indigestion or food poisoning concerns. The shelf life of food may decrease and there are high chances of spreading infections through them. Please avoid street food or anything which is not cooked at home.
8. Regulate Body Temperature
Air conditioners are a big relief for sustaining during summers. But too much of temperature change while you move from AC to Non-AC environment can bring the imbalance in your normal body temperature. So, whenever you have move out of AC room please switch it off 15 minutes before you move out. This will help the body to adjust the steep temperature variations in the much better way.
9. Eye Care
Eyes and skin are the most exposed and affected parts during summers. Excess heat, unlimited screen time can make it worse. It’s important that they wear a hat with a wide brim so that it can give shade to eyes as well. Use goggles at the pool and sunglasses with UV protection can be another help to release the heat.
10. Enough Rest
Summers will always squeeze your energy levels and so with the babies and kids. Due to high temperature, the body gets tired easily and need more rest to improve the immunity. Let babies and kids sleep a little more to feel better and more active on another part of the day. The afternoon nap after lunch is the best time to relax.
