What is weaning?

Weaning is the process to introduce something else other than the breast milk or formula milk. It can be fruits or vegetables or grains in the form of puree or porridges. In simple words process of shifting from breastmilk or formula milk to other solid foods. Process of teaching your baby to eat from a spoon, swallow & eventually chew.

Ready or Not?

As a rough guide weaning period start around 6 months from birth. But every child is different, so don’t rush or hurry. Here’s what you can look out for-

  • Sit up & hold their head steady
  • Seems interested in other foods or take it from your plate
  • Pick things and put it in their mouth
  • Swallow some food when you offer them

Things you should keep in mind

  • Introduce 1 food at a time
  • Always give freshly prepared food
  • Do not forcefully feed your child
  • Start with small quantity and gradually increase the portion
  • Always feed baby when he/she is sitting. Do not feed when the baby is lying on back
  • Sterilise the bowls, spoons, vessels used to feed the baby in hot water
  • No salt, sugar or honey for baby until 1 year
  • Always feed breast milk or formula milk on demand of the baby
  • Most important, to talk to your pediatrician before starting solids

What foods can be given to 6 months old?

  • Breast Milk – Continue breast milk or formula milk
  • Fruits – Apple, Banana, Mango, Sapota / Chiku, Pears, Plums, Pumpkin are some great first foods for a baby
  • Vegetables – Boiled & mashed vegetables like potato, carrots, sweet potato, green peas are some great first foods for a baby
  • Cereals & Pulses – Cereals and pulses such as rice, barley, ragi, sooji / samolina and oats in the form of dals, soups, porridge, halwa provide essential nutrients to the growing babies.

Quantity of Food to be given to a 6 months old

Servings of 5-10ml or one teaspoon is enough to start with the solid foods. Gradually increase the amount depending on the baby’s interest. Do not force-feed the baby. Be careful not to choke or hurt the little tummy with heavy foods
